This 1991 watercolor illustration by Alan Lee, titled Two Orcs in the Land of Shadow, depicts a scene from The Return of the King where a keen-nosed tracker Orc and a heavily armored soldier Orc hunt for spies on the bleak volcanic plateau of Mordor. Published in the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings, the piece beautifully captures the two bickering Orcs whose mutual distrust ultimately allows a hidden Frodo and Sam to slip away unnoticed. Lee’s signature muted tones, realistic chainmail, and grounded, historical aesthetic directly defined the visual look of Mordor for Peter Jackson's live-action film trilogy.
