E. van Vogt's classic science fiction fix-up novel The Voyage of the Space Beagle. The composition depicts a tethered astronaut in orbit encountering Ixtl, the scarlet, immortal extra-galactic predator encountered floating in deep space near the exploration vessel Space Beagle. Originally introduced in van Vogt's 1939 story "Discord in Scarlet", Ixtl's parasitic need to use living human hosts to incubate its eggs famously served as one of the key conceptual inspirations for Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien.
