Painted by Clyde Caldwell in 1992, "Steel & Stone" served as the cover art for the Dragonlance novel of the same name by Ellen Porath (Volume 5 of The Meetings Sextet published by TSR in September 1992), as well as being featured in the 1993 TSR Dragonlance Calendar. The artwork depicts the charged first encounter and tense, burgeoning dynamic between Tanis Half-Elven and Kitiara Uth Matar years prior to the War of the Lance. Set against the rugged, snow-capped mountains of Krynn, Tanis appears as a wild woodsman in buckskins and fur carrying his recurve bow, locking eyes in fierce defiance and magnetic attraction with Kitiara, who draws her sword in ornate steel and fur-trimmed armor.
