Lupoff's comprehensive retrospective feature on Edgar Rice Burroughs' planetary romance series in the September 1982 issue of Heavy Metal Magazine (Vol. VI, No. 6), later reprinted as card #60 in Caldwell's 1995 FPG fantasy collector card set. The dramatic composition depicts Earthman hero John Carter armed with a Barsoomian sword and harness standing protectively alongside Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium, against the crimson expanse of Mars. In the background, the four-armed Green Martian Jeddak Tars Tarkas brandishes a lance atop a multi-legged thoat while Barsoomian fliers cruise across a sky dominated by a massive moon and alien spires.
